8.5b) Qualifications, development and skills

Education and Training

Full time

Full time educations is a 12 hours or more supervised study per week during the the term times which is normally in a class room environment.
An example of where you can full time education is in primary and secondary school. A school that have full time education is chadwell heath Academy, which offer 30 hours of education.
A full time course that i am doing and that i have done is that i have done Media GCSE and currently doing B-TEC level 3 media. Full time education help me to understand the subject much quicker and have one think about focus about.
What i have learnt from this full time education is that i have a feeling of how working would be like in the future, as full time education starts the same time as people are gong to work and also helps me with working with different subject in the same days to help with subject change and communicated with other.

Part time

Part time educations is normally that the length of the courses is increased and also means that the hours per week are reduced.An example of where you can find part time education is in collage the subjects that you could take in the part time course is film and media.
If i decided to take a part time course instead of full time at university it would be Birkbeck as ther offer part time courses such as as the Film and media course, which offer you a course that you go 3 times a week in the evening for four years.
What i would have beneficial for is that i would have a longer period of time to learn and to understand the course, as this is a part time course i would also increase my showreel (port-polio) as doing projects and working inside the film industry which would have learn the film and media course easier.

Level 2

Level 2 is a qualification that you get in secondary school what would be level 2 is GCSE and B-TEC's as this is counted as level 2 qualification.
An real example that you could expect that relate to film and TV is in secondary school as in year 10/11 there are subject such as  Media (GCSE) and B-TEC level 2.
A course that i did to get a level 2 is Media at GCSE, what i did in the subject is create a horror trailer as one of the assignments with a group and also done a live day which was a broadcasting day.
The skills that i learned in Media was the shooting script and learnt that how to write up a shooting scrip document. I also learnt the environment of the live broadcasting industry, as the is multiply of different roles in the TV industry, as some of the new job i have learnt was the VT operator and the floor manager.

Level 3

Level 3 qualification is were you go onto further education such as sixth form, college and apprenticeship to do A levels or BTEC level 3.
Where we can see Level 3 educations is at further education such as A-level subject that are related to film and TV are Media (A-level) and B-TEC level 3.
So far at the moment i am doing B-Tec level three for A-level at sixth form. What i have done so far is create a me-vid and  on the verge on creating a music video. i also took double media which is the other side of media which i am learning about i have learnt about the film and Tv industry.
The skills that i have gained is to work independent and have creative idea which i learnt from the me-vid. For the music video side i have learnt about the techniques and variety of different music video. What i have gained from double was the knowledge of the type of work contract that you have in the different type of job roles.

Graduate

Graduate is a stage of qualification which is optional once you have completed further education as this is lead on to be ranked at higher education.
An example of where we can see graduate is at University as you click here (Ravensbourne University) there are list of subject that you could take that are in higher education that a related to film and TV.
A specific course that i want to take at higher education at ravensbourn university is BA (Hons) Editing and Post Production. The topics that i would learn in this course is sound editing, typography and graphics, colour grading, broadcast technology and visual effects.
The skills that i would like to pick up from this course is the different type of editing. How to edited in different seniors such as movies, document and Dramas. To have skill have to skills to correct the audio and also to learn the concept of CGI.

Sector Skills Councils

Sector skills councils is a interdependent organisations that is in the UK that helps with creative skills and workforce developed sector.
Skill sectors does help you in the film and media industry as the council wants you to get in the creative side in the media industry as what there do is invest into your career choice and give advice to people that want to break into the media industry as they want to help people.

Trade Unions

Trade unions are run by people that work within the business. What it means is that there are willing to help people in the same sector.Where you could find this help is bectu.org.uk as this sit is amid toward the film and TV sector as there are specialized in the media career path you want to take as ther provide an offer you courses that are related in your sector.

Careers Services

Careers services is a sole purpose is to advise those who are in the job prospective  and help pursue there career.
An origination that help you with this is National career services, as what there help you with is to give you guidance towards your career and give you guidance to help you find you a job even through your circumstances. As it can help you get a job in the film and media industry as there is an increase of getting a job 

Career Development

Training on the Job

On the job training is when you trained while you are working instead of a classroom by a professional trainee or a experienced employee.
An example of a job that train in the film and TV industry is the runner as this is why as that it would cost a lot to do.
An example that i was trained on the production was the live day at school which was a day that we broadcast-ed a live show. as i was tough how to use the VT operator on the day.
What is the issue with this is that it may take a long time for you to pick up the job duties.

Continuing Professional Development

Continuing professional development is in a class room setting which is focused on individual to improve and effective professional development.
As i am in a similar situation as being in a class room as i learn media in a class room As this help me to write down information . The issue with this is that media is a subject that you pick up from doing rather then writing , what this could me is that people pick up from doing the job.

Self Training

Self training is when you take responsibility to trains your self through a sources that you could learn/train from.
A real example of were you could train your self is through video which are available on YouTube as there are tutorials and tip and tricks that are available to improve your particle skills in the film and TV industry.
What i have learnt from watching YouTube video is learnt how to edit i has been trained on my own how to edit through different programs such as Sony vegas, finale cut x, after effects, Photoshop, auditions, cinema 4D and other i have personals trains my self through tutorials.
I have learnt of how i could use video to tell a story, the tutorials  available are ranking to beginner to semi professional to professional, i have  learnt visual effects and colour grading in video to tell the mood.
I have had to improve something about this is to teach my self how to use Adobe premier pro as this editing program is used in the film and TV industry mostly.

Transferable Skills:

Commitment

Commitment is about you and me being passionate about the work you want to create for other or yourself. As the work that i have done in the media environment is work such as B-TEC media level 3 work i have worked have how been passionate about the music video that i am yet creating. I have been committed to do this is that i have done video in the past as and the commitment you need to make good and pleasing content is high.

Efficiency

Efficiency is important as i need to do the best in my in my work all the time and to keep my time in order and to organisation my work, as this will be crucial in the film industry as i want to enter this part of the industry as i want to edit movie which requires you to be good with your time.

Reliability & Punctuality

Punctuality is if you will be on time on task that you have to complete in a high standard, Reliability is if you can be trusted to complete a  task in a high standard. As this may be the biggest thing that has effect my work that i have done as i have been trusted on doing work for people such as recently i has to be a photographer for a wedding. I have also been trusted on editing video for for Ben as he was a beginner at editing so he relaid on my to complete them in a high stander on time.

Self-Presentation

Self presentation  is your personal presentation which you are marketing your brand and symbol to other that will influence there opinion.
Where you would use this is when you are you are in a interview for a job or pitching an idea for a movie or a TV shows.
As i have presented my self on YouTube as a creative persons through the way i dress in my video and speak and also the idea i now create as this represents what i seen that is worthy to be creative. As one of the video that i have creative is seen to be creative and i have a presented my self as person that cares for worldly issues. 

Functional skills:

ICT,Mathematics and English

Functional skills are skills that you can transfer and uses to gain and develop the knowledge and understanding in the work place. 
The ICT skill that come in is towards the editing side the Film and TV industry, as the media industry is based all on computer. As the maths skills could be used the financial side of a Movie or a TV shows is to figure out how much it would cost. The English could be the biggest part as i am not very good at my English skills what its used in is to create script, review and actors.

8.5) Planning for the Future

National Press

National Press is a news paper that is published around the country. There is a segment of the News paper towards the back that contains variety of Jobs.
 
An example of news paper that that contains Job in the UK is the Guardian which has a section towards the back which shows different type of job from different industry. 

The Positive for the employees is that the job listed are trusted as there from a populated newspaper.
The pros for the employees is that everyone could see it on the new paper as there is equal opportunities to get the job. It is also a legitimate job as it been placed on a popular news paper as it is safer to apply for.
The Cos for the employees is that as it available to the whole public it is much hard to get the job as it has a lots of competition because lots of people would see it and send it CV as it is for free.
 
The opportunities for the employers is that the can reach out to a larger audience with different skills this also means as there is a guaranteed that there will be a candidate because news paper is available to anyone that wants to look up jobs.
 
The threats to the employers is that it cost a lot of money to place an ad in the news paper as this may be a waste of money because less people are purchasing newspapers because everything is available on the internet. 

Trade Press
Trade Press is a Type of magazines/Article that are targeted towards the public with a particle interest. Theses magazines are mostly available by a subscriptions.
 
An example of a trade press that you see in the film and TV industry is Media Week which has a sections that is specifically amid toward the job in the film and TV industry.
 
The positive for the employees is that the film and TV job are available in one place such as media week which would means that it would be easier for you to find a job of your liking because you could filter out to your specific job you want to apply for.
 
The drawback for the employees is that not everyone has knowledge of media week and other trade press as this could means it may be hard to find. What also could be bad is that that some of the trade press you have to pay a monthly subscription because the film and TV industry would want to look at minimal CV to save time.
 
The advantaged for the employers is that they could address there specific audience through media week it also means that it is easier to get the audience attention toward your job because all of the film and TV job are available in one place.
 
The drawback for the employers is that the employees need to access the press to see the job roles that are available . Its not all of the candidates may be up to your standards because the skills and experience may not match the requirements.

Internet
The internet method is usually a third party website of where the public could go to find jobs that are advertised on the websites.
 
An internet service that specializes in the Film and TV industry is Many.com which is a website that advertises jobs all around the world that are related to Film and TV.
 
The benefits for the employees is that it is quick and easy to get to the site. It is also free and you don't have to pay a subscription.  You also have an ability to filter out the jobs. Also you have equality to get the job as there is normally  a deadline. 
 
The drawback for the employees is that there is a lot of competition which means it is harder for you to get a job in the film.and TV industry. Also the job that are available online may not be legitimate as there may be false because anyone could post a job on mandy.com in order to get your details.
 
The opportunities for the employers is that it is free to place the ads on mandy.com which would is beneficial as a large audience is targeted it is more likely for people to apply for the jobs because it is placed on a free site that anyone could access.
 
The drawback for the employers is that they would receive a lot of bad and unwanted CV as this may be harder for getting to right candidate because they are a lot of people wanting to get the job and they may not be skilled enough.

Word Of Mouth
Word of mouth a spread of information from persons to person verbally which there cone refer to people that may be interested in the job.
 
Where you can see word of mouth in the film and TV industry is when a movie is finished and released, there may be talks about new movie which means new upcoming jobs that you could do yourself or refer to a friend.
 
The benefits for the employees is that you get to meet new people and could have a relationship which could lead to them offering you recommend jobs because they may see you as a potential candidate for the job.
 
The drawback for the employees is that the are required to the film and TV industry. Also that you may be black balling which means that you have a bad reputation which means less people will hire you for a job because it may be spread that you have had messed up a project for a film or TV program.
 
The opportunities for the employers is that it is cost effective as you will not have to speak money on advertising is as it speaks very quickly to people that you may think would be good for the job because of the word of mouth gain.
 
The negative for the employers is that the message may not get spread wide enough to your liking of the candidates you want because it may not be an interesting job to speak and to offer to your right candidates.

 
Networking
Networking is when people from within the industry have a gathering and talk to other people that are in the filed of the jobs type there want to head in.
 
It is not what you know it is about who you know.
The positive for the employees is that they are able to make job opportunities. Is that you will also be making new friends that you have trust in the film and TV industry because this part of the job sector is seen to be creative as this may lead to gaining your ideas.
 
The drawback for the employees is that they would have to maintain there relationship with there friend in the film and TV industry for a long time in order to gain trust with the audience because it may be seen as un professional to approached them after a long time with no contact.
 
The benifits for the employers is that potential employee will come with some credibility because have been involved in film or TV which tell us that they have lot of experience.
 
The drawback for the employer is that not everyone in the film and TV industry are trust worthy because they may have done project in the past that they have messed up.
Personal Contacts
Personal Contacts is what you get out of Networking it is the people that you have a relationship with that could potentials do the job.
 
The positive for the employees is that you may be recommended for a job which would make your chance more likely to get a job in the film and TV industry.
 
The drawback for the employees is that they would have to know people in order to get
 recommended for a job in the film and TV industry because it may seem un professional to approach them.
 
The pros for the employers is that it is cheaper to hired the employees as you would not have to pay for advertising the job because you have preciously known the candidate for the job that you are offering.
 
The cons for the employers is that not all of the candidates are good as there may not by very skilled to recommend them for the job because of the experience that they have had , as this may lead to advertising the job role.

Internal Promotions
Internal Promotions is a promotion within the business that the industry know already.

Were you would find an internal promotions in the film and media industry as example of who would be most interested in this is the runner as he/she would had the job and would want a promotion.
 
The positive for the employees is that you will already be comfortable and families with the film and TV working environment as they would not have to be shown around the industry again because they are in the industry already.

The drawback for the employees is that that could get resentment from the other employees that did not get the promotion and also this could also means a difficult transitions because the job may be hard at first and may take long to get used to the job.

The positive for the employers is that they will be less training involved as the internal employee will already know the industry because they worked here before.

The drawback for the employers is that the employees within the company may not have enough skill to promote them as it may be forced to bring in new recruitment because they may want to find someone with the best skills for the job.

Trade Fairs
Trade fie is a large conventions that put up stalls of there specific industry and promote there jobs available in the industry.
 
An example of where you could find trade fairs related to film and TV is Tradefiredate.com which is a website which shows dates for different convention there is a category where you could film the Television sector.
A trade fair that I coming up is in Berlin what the trade fair would be about is the film and TV development.
 
The positive for the employees is that they would be able to see a lot of companies for the Film and TV industry in a short amount of time because there is huge number of media company that come to the trade fair.
 
The drawback for the employees is that they are lots of people in the trade fairs as you may get lost in the crowd and may be hard to get noticed because there are lots of rivals that are competing for the same job.
 
The pros for the employer is that they could gather the very best candidates that are the most committed to work in the film and TV industry because they come to the trade fair and the industry have want their want.
 
The cons for the employer is that they see a lot of people at the trade fair and not all of them are looking for a job. What also could be bad is that they may not get the candidates that they wanted to get because there may not be experienced enough.

8.3b) Employment & legal issues in film and TV

Heath and Safety

Health and safety is where employers have to put in place reasonable protection for the employees from potential harm and danger in the work place.
 
An general example of where you could find this in the film and TV in when the employees such as camera operator or fall mangers are in the studio set as there is a hazard from part from the set from falling and/or being electrocuted .
 
The opportunities that the camera operator would get from the heath and safety policy is that the would make the work environment safe also protection would be put in to protect the camera operator from harm.
 
 The threats to the camera operator is that the film/TV company may not follow the health and safety policy which would lead to the employee from not feeling safe in there working condition.
 
 Opportunities that the company may have is make the employees feel safe from what this would do is build a trust with the employees and would help increase work quality.
 
The threats that the employer would have is that they would have to put in place a safer environment for the employees what this would do is increase the cost of the company.

Equal opportunities

Equal opportunities where any employee is treated fairly without any prejudice in the work place that also has the equal opportunity to the job as well as being able to obtain an upper pay scale or further promotion to heighten their careers. 

A company that does use this equal opportunities is Warner Bors when there are hiring or promoting someone in the work place.
 
The opportunities that the employee would have is the would have that there would have equal opportunities to get a promotion or a job in warner bros. This would make them trust warner brother and won't feel out numbered.
 
The threats that the employee may have working for or applying for warner bros is that they may not follow the act of equal have opportunities for the employees, this may lead employee have less trust in the industry.
 
The pros for the warner bros is that from following this act is that the company would have a better representation and may lead to more people with higher skill working for warner bros.
 
The cons to warner bros is that there have to be careful from the action that they do and also what there say as it may be seen as prejudice the employees when being chosen to be hired or promoted for a hight paid job.

Equality Act 2010

Equality act 2010 is a legal document produced by the government that states the laws the employer has to abide by when hiring and through the persons employment.
 
An example of a company that uses this equality act 2010 is Dreamwork as there uses it when there are going through the hiring process.
 
The advange for the employees is that the there would feel safe when applying for the job as there would have knowledge of dreams work on following the Act.

The disadvanges for the employees is that Dream works why not follow the equality act that the government have produced

The Pros for Dreams Works is that there would be trusted by there employees, which would lead to them getting the most out of there employees, what this may also do is create a good word of mouth.

The cons for Dreams work is that there would have to put in the act when hiring the specific employee what this would mean is that there would have to spend money to put forward the act.

Employers Liability

Employers liability is that the employer has the responsibility for the protection of the employee at the work place as well as the overall business and the financing. 

An example of a company that uses this act is ITV  as there have a high responsibility as it is a big company. 


The cons for the employees is that ITV may not follow the employers liability which may lead to them making the working environment to suitable condition to work in and also it may be that the salary may not be spread out fairly.

The pros for the employees is there would feel safe at work from because ITV have followed this rule. You would also be paid fairly and would not experience any favouritism toward the salary of the employees.

The disadvantage for ITV is that they would have to put in protection in the work place which  would lead to ITV spending money of the employees. There also would have to be careful of the salary there pay to there employees.

The advance for ITV is that there would have a good word of mouth due to the pay of the employees of being equal. 

Employee Rights

Employee right is the legal and legitimate entitlements that are wrote in the employees contract which are dependent on their age.
 
An example of a company that could give this right to there employees is endermol as there produces shows globally.
 
The opportunities that the employees is that their have control over what there can do and what legal rights do there have as working for  Endermol 

The threats to the employees is that not all ages have to same amount of rights as a 16 year old will not have the same rights as a 21 year old. As this means there may not feel comfortable at the Endemols work place.

The pros for Endemols is that there can be more understanding of the employees and could  and also could motivate the employees to do more work and have more trust with the Endemols.

The cons for Endermols is that there have to be careful of what there say and/or do to the employees as there have rights as this may lead to them seeing you and having a bad representation of Endermol.

Belonging to a trade union


Belonging to a trade union is a act to defend the employees rights and physical and psychological harm in the work place.
 
An example of a company that uses this act would be Pixar as there produces movies that take a long period of time.
 
The opportunities for the employees is that pixar would provide them with care , as this would make them feel safe at work and wanted at there work place at pixar.
 
The threats to the employees is that Pixar may not follow the act as this may lead to the employees having less trust in them and may leading them to quit there job at pixar.
 
The pros for pixar is that their employees would trust them , and would lead to them working their best at pixar and would lead to a good word of mouth about the quality of there product and there look out of there employees. 
 
The cons for pixar is that if there don't look after there employee and give them working hour that could physically and psychological drain them and lead to poor quality work.

Intellectual property


Intellectual property is shelter their assists, original and creative ideas and to prohibit the imitation of any work.

An example of the company that uses this act is Walt Disney as there produces big movies that make big money.
 
The disadvantage for walt Disney is that idea could be leaked by the employees at walt Disney to other hollywood company that could copy the idea and sell it which means Disney would lose out on money.
 
The advantage for walt Disney is there would protect there potential idea from any other hollywood company from copy the film idea there fresh and new idea that could make them a large amount of profit.

Copyright/Trademark

Copyright/trademark is a physical, legal document that can be purchased to stop any replication of the original idea.

An example of a company that uses copyright in there produces is Universal.

 The pros for the universal is that there could protect their film idea such as fast and furious 7 from getting replicated, as copyright and trademark allows them to have legal rights on sueing anyone that copy there idea.

The Cons for universal is that they have to pay yo put the copyright and trademark act on the film as this could cost a lot of money, as the copyright make is not always effective.

Other Forms of intellectual property

Other forms of intellectual property is a physical product or aesthetics that any other person or institution that can not copy when a patent has been placed.
 
An example of a product would be Star wars as the font could be they own font that they can only use.
 
The advantage for lucasfilm is that they would have rights to sue other company that uses there Font that they used in start wars. There also have a less chance on there copying there font because it is apart of Disney.
 
The disadvantage of Lucasfilm is that it cost a lot to maintain the right and to keep in track of other company that could paternal steal the font of the Star wars Fancies.

Passing off

 Passing off is when a person or institution attempts to emulate a product when truly it is another's.

An example of where you could see this in the industry is the Simpsons as there follow there act of add in other products.

The positive for Simpsons is that this could bring in more views and a different segments of the audience which would mead to higher view rates which means more money.

The disadvantage for Simpsons is if there denotes the product in a way that the company there emulated from that does not like it and offends them this may lead to getting bad reviews and may lead to losing out on money

Race Relations Act 1976


It is an act that protects the public against prejudice on racial grounds and the communication between the public of other racial groups. Racial grounds is seen as race, ethics, colours and nationality.

An example of a company that uses this act is film 4 as there make movies that related to other such as four lines and The road to Guantanamo. 


The employee advantage is that their would feel comfortable at work, as there won't be effect from the way there are represented, there won't be treated differently due to the race.

The disadvantage for the employees is that film 4 may not follow the race relations act 1976 as this may effect the way the employees are treated at work , and may lead to them have to force to leave work.

The pros for film 4 is they will gain trust with the employees and this would lead to the employees  do more work for the film 4 and leading it to good word of mouth.

The cons for film 4 is that they have to be careful of what there say and do the the employee as it may offend them and may be seen as prejudice which may lead to them seeing the company.

Broadcasting Act 1990


A government produced document that allowed to loosen regulations, which in turn helped to create a healthy competition. This allowing for consumers to have a much broad choice.

An example of a company that it may relate to is Sky which is a UK satellite provider.

The pros for the public is that is give you a bigger choice of what you can watch, and a variety of what you want to watch, it would keep the audience engaged.

The cons for the public is that to much choice could be bad , as the same thing may be repeated over and over again as this may be off putting.

The opportunities that Sky would is that there will always be something aired on TV, as there also have have new competition coming in to compete with other channel.

The threats that Sky could have is that they may lose customers as the healthy companions may be available on other services such as Netflix.

Obscene Publications Act 1959

A law which strives to protect consumers from obscene and derogatory media texts and institutions that will otherwise cause a great ordeal to those who exhibit content made by the institution. The content may be deemed as 'obscene' if in any shape has degraded those who have worked in the production of the content.   
 
Human centipede was effect by the obscene publications act 1959 as it was seen to be to graphical for the audience.
 
The advantages for the public is that there would not experience scene that would be to explicit and may effect them

The cons for the public is that there wont experiences the true content of human centipede because of the

The threats for six entertainment did have from the obscene publication act is that parts of human centipede had to be edited to be viewed in the UK , because to movie contained content the was unable to be played in the UK.

The advantaged for six entertainment is that the publicity would have gone up for the movie and there would have increased the box office money 

British Board Of film Classification

The BBFC is a non government management that controls and labels films into seven classification section include U, PG , 12 , 12A, 15, 18 and R18.
 
As all film are set a classification certificate and a specify one that was giving a rating of 12a was Dark Knight Rises.
 
The opportunities that the public have is that there would be informed before watching the film what is contained in the film from the BBFC certificate that their have been given.
 
The threats that the public may have is not all of the public would be allowed to watch the film. And also not all of the industry follow the rule as the system is abused from all underage public from getting into a movie.
 
The opportunities that the BBFC would have is their would have full control over the certificate their give to a movie without the government permission.
 
The threats that the BBFC would have is that not everyone would agree on the certificate that their gave to the film for example was the movie Dark Knight was given a rating 12 and was augured about is should have been certificated 15 because of a particular scene that could be reacted by a child.

Ofcom

It is a corporations that helps the UK population to get best out of their communications services as their control the TV, mobile, radio services line telecom, postal services and wireless device services. 
 
company that they help get the best of there services is Sky as it is a service that provides a satellite TV and needs a good signal.
 
The threat to the public is not all of the time that the TV services and Mobile service would be the best because ofcom may not be given the best to the public.
 
The pros for the public is there will have the best service that the country gives them so the best TV signal would be given to them for no extra cost.
 
The advantages for ofcom is that there best service that there provide for the country would lead to them of having good word of mouth.
 
The cons for ofcom is that the public are expecting better services all the time and also if there is a lack in the communications services it means that there would be blamed for and held responsible for for the services.
